The stock of knowledge in the energy sector exerts a negative effect on forward citations of patented inventions in fossil and nuclear technologies.
A similar effect is found for renewable technologies. However, we find that the number of patents based on renewables is significantly higher than those related to other types of energy.
Interestingly, co-inventorship has a positive effect on knowledge diffusion. However, it is not significant for diffusion of renewable energy patents.
